Believe it or not, sound quality is probably even more important for the overall effectiveness of a video production than video quality.I firmly believe that viewers will tolerate mistakes in video quality before they will tolerate mistakes in sound recording. If a viewer can not hear the sound portion of your video, they will shut it off.I saw this exact problem in action the other day. An internet marketer had put up a video that had fantastic content, but crummy sound. The comments were quite wicked.



People not only shut the video off, some of them completely discredited the guy saying that if he was not smart enough to record decent audio, then by golly he wasn't smart enough to have credibility on any subject.Ouch!So how do you get quality sound in your video production? Use the right microphone in the correct way.DISTANCE OF SOUNDMicrophones come in all varieties. Some are meant to be spoken into at close range and others are designed to pick up from a long distance. A hand held microphone is normally one that picks up best at close range and a shotgun microphone is the type you use to pick up sound from a distance.



A lavalier mic is a tiny one that pins onto your collar.A microphone close to the speaker's mouth is going to pick up MUCH better than one far away. Going back to my example above, the guy had just relied on the mic on-board his camera and the camera was at the back of the room. Every cough, grunt and mumble picked up more loudly than he did.DIRECTION OF SOUNDSome mics only pick up sounds that are directly in front of it and others also pick up sounds coming from the side. This is called the pick up pattern and it is often described as a shape.



A carotid pick up pattern resembles a heart shape. Carotid being the same root word found in cardio, meaning heart.The terms omni directional and unidirectional also describe this aspect of microphones. Omni, meaning many, picks up sounds, Two Way Walkie Talkie Products, coming from all directions. (No mic does well with sounds coming from behind it.) Uni, meaning one, picks up sound coming from in front only.For speaking, using a uni-directional mic close to the mouth is the best bet.WIRELESS AND HARD WIREDMicrophones also come in wired and wireless versions.



A wired microphone is plugged into your camera and the on-camera person can only go as far as your cable will let you. A wireless microphone is like a mini radio receiver and transmitter. You plug the receiver portion of the wireless microphone into your camera and the person speaking on-camera wears the transmitter part. A wireless mic allows the person speaking to be far away from the camera since there is no cable acting like an umbilical cord.SO WHICH MICROPHONE DO YOU NEED?It depends on how you are going to use it.



The single biggest audio mistake people make in video production is to rely on the microphone that comes attached to the camcorder for every purpose. This on-board mic is good for some applications but not for others. The on-board mic on most camcorders is a small shot gun mic. The sounds it picks up best are those about 3-6 feet away coming mostly from the front, but it also does relatively well with sounds coming from the side. Generally speaking, a shot gun microphone is best used for ambient, or natural sound.



This is any sound that happens to be occurring while you are video taping. Sounds of cars, birds, crowd rumble, whatever.The on-board shot gun mic is not necessarily good for picking up a person speaking directly to the camera. In most circumstances, using it this way will result in poor quality audio that has way too much background noise in it to be well understood. You can fix this by eliminating all background noise, if that is possible. Then, place the camera two to four feet from your person speaking and have them talk loudly.



The best way to record a person speaking directly into the camera is to either pin a small lavaliere microphone on their collar or to have them use a handheld just an inch or two from their lips. A lavaliere microphone is the tiny clip-on mic no bigger than your pinky tip. Because they are so small, they essentially disappear in your shot. So lavs are considered more attractive than hand held mics but either will do the job.If you want to get shots where your on-camera talent is a long distance from the camera, use a wireless.



But if your on-camera talent is in the same room as the camera, a hard wire will be fine. In fact it might be better because you have to get a pretty expensive wireless for it to work well. A crummy wireless is a pain in the cajoonies because you will get sound interference from competing radio signals (cell phones, walkie-talkies, etc.) and a tinny result.In order to use a supplemental microphone when videotaping, you have to have a camera that has an input for it. Many inexpensive camcorders do not have a microphone input so your only option is the on-board mic.



This is one of the major drawbacks to using a cheap camcorder.Camcorders higher up on the quality scale will have a mic input. There are several different kinds, mini-plugs to XLR, so you have to have a mic and camera input that are compatible.If you are shooting low-budget video, you can get a cheap lav at places like Radio Shack for about $25 that will plug in using a mini jack. Unless you have a fairly expensive camcorder, it will have a mini jack if it has an audio input at all. For the price, these work well.



I promise you will get ten times better sound using a $25 dollar lavalier than just relying on the camera's shotgun mic.So next time you are making video, keep these tips in mind for better sound quality.

Buy food and supplies in bulk at Sams club or Costco. Rotate your stock so you always have the freshest food available. Also include things like high-energy bars. Don't forget pet food. Water—You can store water in large containers, 5-gallon mylar water bags, camping jugs and other containers. You should also own a good water purifier.Tools—are you equipped to handle minor repairs around your home? Fix your auto? Repair or build needed survival supplies? Tools to turn off natural gas, shovels to dig out, chainsaws to cut up downed trees and other essential rescue tools may be needed.



Energy—there may be interruptions or outages in electrical and other utilities. Do you have an alternative way of heating your home? A way of supplying power to lights and other needed electrical devices? Stocked up on batteries? A portable generator can be used for emergency backup. You will need gas to run the generator. Solar panels are handy for charging batteries. Extra propane can be used for a stove, lights or heat. Have several flashlights on hand. Newer flashlights feature L.E.D. bulbs that burn brighter and last forever.



Also look for hand cranked flashlights that don't need batteries. Include lighting such as oil or propane lanterns.Medical— a good first aid kit is a must have. Over the counter drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, antacids, etc. Also personal medications and other first aid supplies. Don't forget spare glasses/contacts and contact lens solution. Brush up on your first aid skills.Household supplies—everything from shampoo and toothpaste to toilet paper, soap, detergent, bleach, disinfectants and everything else you use on a daily basis.



Don't forget hair clippers if you can't get out to the barber. Have supplies on hand to deal with sanitation and garbage.Communication—Newer walkie-talkies that have a 10-12 mile range will help you stay in touch with your family in the event your cell phone stops working. Give each member of your family one and tune them all to the same channel. Buy an emergency battery for your cell phone. They are good for about 60 minutes of talk time. Portable shortwave radios will help you keep in touch with the world.



A small portable tv will also help keep you informed if the power is out. A hand cranked radio is also a must have.Camping equipment—stoves, tents, sleeping bags can all come in handy especially if you need to relocate. Pick up camping supplies on sale and used equipment at garage sales.Bicycles—if you need to get around and there is no gas a bike is the best item to have.Relocating—if you choose not to stay in your home, then you need a plan on how you will relocate-to another town or remote cabin, etc.



You may want to stock your vacation home with supplies and be prepared to "bug out" before travel is restricted. Figure out how far you need to get away. Think about storing extra gas to provide a full tank and enough for your journey. 3 or 4-5 gallon gas cans, could be enough to get you several hundred miles away. Because of the fire danger it is very important that you store them safely and rotate them on a regular basis. Meaning, if you have 3 filled cans, week one dump that in your gas tank and refill that can.



Week 2 dump the second can in your gas tank and refill that can. Week 3 dump can 3 into your gas tank and refill that can. Week 4 start over with can one. Using this system you will always have 15 gallons of fresh gas on hand in addition to gas that is already in your gas tank.Plan your exit strategy from your city or town. Keep a map in your car with the roads out highlighted. Find all the alternative routes out of your city or town. Stay away from main highways if at all possible. Have copies of the map in other vehicles if other family members need to meet you later.



Practice your escape route by driving it at least once.Store your "bug out" survival supplies in containers that can be quickly loaded into your vehicle. Keep a smaller version in your vehicle at all times.Start today preparing for the unexpected and if it happens you won't need to divert your time and energy away from caring for your family, waiting in long lines for essential goods and services or waiting for the government or other aid organizations to come to your rescue.

Every business needs reliable communications to function properly and I'm not even talking about anything hi-tech here. If two cans on a string work for you, then congratulations, you've found exactly what you need. At least it'll be easy for you, should you decide to upgrade your system in the future. Just finish off another can of corn and hook it up.However, (refer to my other article: "What You Should Know Before You Purchase a Two Way Radio" for more information concerning my dreaded "howevers")…now, where was I?



Oh yes, HOWEVER…for most businesses, a can on a string will not do. The good news for you is that there are so many options out there; it would be very hard not to be able to find a system that's perfect for you.Your two main options are, or at least the options that will be discussed here are: Two-Way Radios and Cell Phones. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the, Two Way Walkie Talkie Products, type of business you're in. You probably already knew that; but you're reading this article to find out exactly what those advantages and disadvantages are.



You're in luck, because I'm going to share some of them with you. In the interest of brevity, this article won't include all I'd like to say. If you'd like more information, stay tuned until the end for contact information.Cell Phones:To begin, we will look at cell phones. Today, some cell phones even have a walkie-talkie feature. This has bridged the gap between cell phones and two way radios, but there is still a lot of space in between. Currently, cell phones are the closest thing to the 'ole can on a string analogy mention above.



If you only have a few people working for you and they are sometimes on the go, cell phones are great. Usually, they're pretty cheap to buy and maintain. If you get the phones for free, the only thing you'll really have to worry about cost-wise is the monthly fee, say $40-$50 per month per phone roughly. For reliable communications, this is a small price to pay.If you have 5 or more people working for you, I would begin to look for other solutions aside from cell phones. The reason for this is not because I have something personal against cell phones.



Rather, it is because cell phones have something personal against us and it's already been mentioned: monthly fees.Not to name names here, but one provider of walkie-talkie cell phones charges roughly $50 per month for the first phone and around $30 a month for every additional phone on your plan. If you have 10 people working for you, you may have gotten your cell phones free from the provider, but over time they will certainly make up the difference. You're paying around $800 per month, a whopping $9600 per year and that's assuming you never once went over on minutes.



Ouch, talk about a waste.Monthly-fee issues aside, there are a few other things to consider concerning cell phones. The first one is a minor issue that can easily turn into a major issue. Cell phones, unlike two way radios, can be abused. Users can call whoever they want, racking up minutes that could end up costing you. There's also a productivity issue with this as well. As workers are racking up minutes calling mom to make sure everything's okay, what are they not doing? They're not working, and even if they are working, they aren't paying much attention until after that call is done.



In addition to productivity issues, there are control issues. A lot of business owners like to have control. I mean, it's probably one of the reasons they've started a business in the first place. One thing cell phones don't give you a lot of is control. You have no control over what kind of customer service you get, and from what I've heard it's sometimes very poor. You also have no control over your system if it were to die on you and you have no control over when the phone company will be able to get it up and running again.



(Are you sick of reading the word "control" yet?)Summary:So, where do I stand with cell phones? The truth is I don't stand anywhere with them. Don't get me wrong here, either. I deal with two way radios but I do admit to more than a few occasions where it makes more sense to use a cell phone. For personal use, they are the best. For business use, they can work very well, depending on the type of business. Smaller businesses will find them more practical and possibly more cost effective than alternatives but larger businesses will no doubt require more from their communications.



Two-Way Radios:After looking at what cell phones can do for you, it's now time to look at one of the alternatives, two way radios. Just like cell phones, sometimes it makes sense to use them, sometimes it doesn't. As per my mention earlier, if it's just you and Frank the assistant manager needing to communicate, use a cell phone. I've said this before and you may be asking yourself why. Are small businesses not worthy of two-way radios? Of course they are, but here's why I say what I do.If your company wants to use a two-way radio, you must first purchase a license from the FCC if you do not already have one.



The licenses are typically a little under $500 depending on your situation and are good for 10 years. For two people, this may not be worth it. However, for medium to large companies, this is worth every penny and can actually end up saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year.Let's continue to use the example I gave you above in the cell phones section. Say you have 10 workers needing to communicate. Your cell phone system will be costing at least $9,600 per year and let's say you need this for about 4 years, which is very typical, especially since cell phones require contracts.



Over 4 years, your communications system has cost you $38,400.Now, let's say these 10 people are to be given the 4 channel Motorola CP200 UHF model. The average price out there is around $400, you can contact me for a more exact price if you like. 10 people get 10 radios at $4,000 plus we'll say $450 for an FCC license, which over 10 years is only $45 per year! So, not only will you save about $34,000 over 4 years, but think of everything else you'll be getting as well.For starters, you get your control back Mr.



Business Owner. You have purchased the radios and the license; therefore you control your airways. The only way the system will crash is if your radios crash and Motorola radios typically last at least 7-10 years. Heck, there are radios still in use older than me and I'm in my mid-twenties.You also don't have to worry about poor customer service because you've probably purchased your radio from an authorized dealer. Unlike phone companies, most dealers have actual live human beings answering their phones.



Plus, you're connected to a consultant whose job is to work with you every step of the way to ensure your satisfaction…someone like me.Summary:There are features that many two way radios have that cell phones do not. These features can be pretty important for most business owners and dispatchers, such as priority scan and stun, but we won't go into deal about that here. Also, just as cell phones have added a walkie talkie feature to catch up with radios, radios have now begun to go digital.



Digital means it has the ability to send more information, such as text messages; once again bridging the gap.If you're still undecided on which way to go, do a simple ROI calculation. Calculate how much it would cost to have cell phones over a 2-4 year period and how much it would cost to have two way radios over the same period. In most instances, it's more cost effective to buy radios. However, as I've said before, cell phones have their place. You're best bet would be to contact an authorized two way radio dealer and explain your situation.

You can come on week after week and get your marketing messages out to the millions at any time you like. That is TOTAL FREEDOM.But what many people do not realize is that podcasting can be used to get incredible search engine rankings. This is a very powerful thing to keep in mind. Currently as I write this I have the number 10th popular show on Podomatic in the business section. Its been like that for quite a while. I didn't have to buy my way to the top. I just plugged in a microphone and went for it. I blurted out tips and secrets and kept the format into a neat 40 minute segment.More to the point I never asked for permission to do any of this. If I were to say, "podcasting allows you to convert audio material via an RSS feed through an uploaded host..." the sound of your yawning would drown out the click of your mouse as you ventured to a different website.Podcasting is about creation. It's about taking your ideas, dreams, ambitions, business goals, or any other reason that you'd use your voice for to create a lasting record of said content and making it available to others.



And one of the reasons it's so fun is because it's easy. Get a microphone, press a couple of buttons, and start talking.And if you're thinking, "but what would I say? I'm not funny or interesting and nobody would care about my show." In short, I disagree.You may not get an audience of 10,000 listeners, but the audience you do get will be utterly interested in what you have to say.That's why they call podcasting the ultimate niche marketing medium. If you're not in marketing all that means is, you can speak directly and specifically to the people who are listening versus trying to speak in general terms to broadcast to a larger audience.

The joy was in communicating the joy of talking to one another using a fun medium. Podcasting is just like that.RADIO DAYS - MY LIFE AS A STRUGGLING RADIO HOSTLong before my days as a Rebel Marketer, ( a soon to be popular online show! It was a thrill to be in his class. We watched in awe when UncleSteve dropped potassium in a glass of water. It ignited andskipped in circles over the water's surface. Years passed and four of my five siblingsgot married giving me a brother-in-law and three newsisters-in-law. Seemingly overnight, my older brothers fatheredfive children, and my sister bore five, for a total of tenyoungsters with ten new personalities.



Being an uncle to five girls and five boys was something I wasunprepared for because I was single. Did I have a role to playin the lives of my nieces and nephews? Suddenly, I had questionswithout answers and didn't know how to behave. It's difficult tocall on the telephone. Who has the time during internship andresidency? And it's so hard to call at the right time to afamily with little kids who are napping or going to bed early.To my surprise, I discovered a way to reach out to my nieces andnephews.
